JANICE HATHAWAY: TRANSMORGRAPHY
PRINTED EXHIBITION CATALOGS ARE AVAILABLE AND MAILED UPON REQUEST.
Janice Hathaway’s transmorgraphs are living moments as imagery situations. Her exhibition, transmorgraphy, at the Linda Matney Gallery from February 7 through March 14, 2020, features her new process of artistic composition, which she invented and has developed over the past several decades. Her transmorgraphs suggest a strong interplay between plausible and implausible, teasing the viewer to suspend disbelief in the presence of her “surreality” merging dreams and fantasy, the conscious and unconscious. Janice lives in Williamsburg Virginia and teaches Graphic and Media Design at Thomas Nelson Community College.

March 20 would have been Linda Matney’s eightieth birthday. Gallery curator Lee Matney’s mother lost her battle with cancer in 2001. Donations will be taken in her name during the exhibition for charities supporting cancer research starting at the opening event through the remainder of 2020. As part of the Tenth Anniversary Celebration, patrons can expect an unprecedented collection of artists, music, and experiences at the Gallery starting with the Tenth Anniversary Exhibit March 21- April 11, 2020.
Some of the fine artists confirmed for this celebration include Michael K. Paxton, Michael Knud Ross, Brian Hitselberger, Art Rosenbaum, Merrilee Cleveland, Zuzka Vaclavik, John Rudel, Leigh Anne Chambers and Kristin Skees representing multiple mediums, countries, and styles.
Matney sees this event as a way to establish the Gallery as a multimedia destination for the region and hopes other artists, collectors, and enthusiasts will share feedback on the experience to help him inclusively program for the future. “I’m hoping patrons can see something new, engaging and inspiring from the recent past and help me usher in an era of new multimedia experiences that expands the Virginia art scene,” says Curator Matney.

Recently, work from John Lee Matney’s photography practice was featured in the book Cool Town: How Athens, Georgia, Launched Alternative Music and Changed American Culture by Grace Elizabeth Hale (debuting March 23, 2020). The image is of Jeremy Ayers described by many, including the author, as the most important single figure in the Athens art and music scene. Ayers was a superstar with Andy Warhol’s factory as well as a painter, photographer, musician, and songwriter in Athens. Matney had several encounters and conversations with Ayers starting in the 1980s in their creative circles continuing until his death in 2016.

Linda Matney Gallery is dedicated to hosting exhibitions of innovative emerging artists, as well as displaying the work of more established national and international artists, including works of painting, installation, video, photography, sculpture and performance. Named after Linda Matney, who lost her battle with cancer in 2001, John Lee Matney and the Matney family have established a research-based contemporary gallery that develops thematic group shows and collaborative art projects with international and American artists in Virginia and elsewhere.
In its ten years in the community - Linda Matney Gallery has focused on the work and ideas of some of the most significant and provocative artists of our time including Alison Stinely's Gilded Splinters in 2018 that faced censorship before finding a home at the Matney Gallery in the #metoo movement as well as A Celebration of Female Artists in 2017 that showcased local female artists and the motivations and challenges they faced in their work. With a global curiosity, the Gallery has brought exhibits and artists from all corners of the world including Transposition: Asian Cultures and Transposition at the Highpoint - a collection of works curated in conjunction with Landmark Arts & Cultural Exchange, showcasing contemporary artists to travel between countries and facilitates for meaningful cultural exchange.
