PRESS RELEASE
Nicole Santiago at Current Midtown
Description:
At Current Midtown, Nicole Santiago presents a group of paintings that explore domestic space, memory, and the layered emotional structures embedded within everyday life. Working through representational painting, Santiago constructs interiors, still lifes, and figurative scenes that move between autobiography and allegory, creating spaces where personal history, routine, care, and shifting identity coexist within the painted surface.
A professor at William & Mary and a finalist for the Bennett Prize, Santiago brings sustained attention to materiality, perception, and lived experience. Her paintings resist spectacle in favor of prolonged looking, allowing ordinary objects and spaces to accumulate psychological and symbolic weight. Through carefully structured compositions and painterly realism, the work reflects on motherhood, intimacy, resilience, and the evolving construction of female identity.
Presented within the public-facing environment of Current Midtown, the exhibition continues an ongoing dialogue between contemporary painting, academic practice, and community engagement within Williamsburg’s broader cultural landscape. VIEW THE EXHIBITION ON ARTSY
