American, born 1970

Merrilee Cleveland’s fine sculpture is imbued with a mysterious quality, seemingly both ancient and contemporary at the same time. It is influenced by ancient art, literature, mythology, and cultural studies.  It is whimsical, yet sublime. Merrilee Cleveland graduated from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1992 with a BFA in Sculpture.

Merrilee's works primarily in lost wax cast bronze. She has been creating sculpture for over 25 years.  After earning her BFA from the Art Institute of Chicago in 1992, she partnered with a group of artists in Milwaukee, WI to form Vanguard Sculpture Services, LTD, a full service art foundry which still operates today.  In 2000, she left that business in their good hands and embarked on her solo career as a sculptor. Since then her personal odyssey has taken her across the US and abroad. She has had studios based in Wisconsin, Arizona, California, Colorado and now Virginia. She has been appointed as a Visiting Artist at the Hellenic School of the Arts on Paros Island, Greece, at The Colorado Springs School, and most recently at The School of The Art Institute of Chicago.

Merrilee was honored to be awarded the Resident's Choice Award at the Port Warwick Art Festival in Newport News during 2014, and to be the featured artist in the 2015 Fall Arts issue of Williamsburg's Next Door Neighbor magazine, In June of 2016 Merrilee was selected as a featured artist by WHRO's The Scene, which debuted as a PBS television series called Curate on October 21, 2016.  WHRO and Curate recently filmed a “Catch Up” episode with Merrilee which aired January 12, 2018.
