Kristin Skees and Ryan Lytle: By a Thread

By A Thread is a selection of recent and collaborative work by Kristin Skees and Ryan Lytle.

Through photography and sculpture, this show takes a playful look at how the fabric of our self identity is woven from experiences, environments, and relationships, shaped into an expression of who we are and how we impact the world around us.

Skees’ photographs investigate identity through the spaces we create (both personal and collective), and the uneasy relationship between the subject and artist, and artist and viewer.

Lytle’s sculptures explore memory, storytelling, and folklore as the underlying force shaping our search for self identity.

Working as colleagues for years, Skees and Lytle have taken this exhibition opportunity to develop a new body of collaborative work. Their shared love of fiber, bold color and exploration of identity forms a foundation for new playful and experimental self-portraits.

After many years of studying and teaching anatomy, Laura Frazure has developed a distinctive approach to figurative sculpture, specifically concentrating on the female body. Rejecting direct observation and the use of live models, Frazure employs a more structural approach to form-making and invented proportional relations. This process emphasizes “direct modeling”, highlighting form and form development with no subsequent mediatory processes. Using translucent waxes coated with a thin glaze of oil paint and varnish, air dry clay and a modeling compound, the figures are constructed on a steel reinforced aluminum wire armature.

The inspiration or generative material for Frazure’s work comes from a number of sources, including literature, popular culture, politics, the media and art history; all directed toward the uses, commodification and modes of presentation of women. These source contents combine with the study of anatomy, “bodily rhetoric,” and the expressive qualities of materials to inform the work. Narrative fiction has proven to be especially influential from early on in Frazure’s practice, having a profound effect on her development as a figurative artist.

The title of the exhibition reflects Frazure’s interest in the conventions of “bodily rhetoric”, described as denaturalized figural attitudes or poses, invented to express ideas intrinsic to a particular medium. The Greek Kouros figures serve as notable examples of a derived pose specific to the medium of sculpture. A number of Frazure’s sculptures reference the idiosyncratic, media generated poses of contemporary fashion photography, with the presentation of the body, as in the Kouros figures, lying outside the realm of normal posture and colloquial gesture.

A more recent group of works directly reference the poses, gestures and facial expressions of social justice protestors.  Individual figures are extracted from groups of protestors, mostly in Philadelphia, using documentary photography from print and digital media sources. These along with a companion series of poses of physical labor are composed “verbatim” in a more direct, naturalistic manner and together offer visual metaphors for the contemporary human condition in late capitalist America.

BIO

Laura Frazure is a sculptor and an Assistant Professor and Coordinator of Sculpture within the Fine Arts Department at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. She has also been a Professor of Anatomy at the New York Academy of Art and most recently was a visiting Professor at the Central Academy of Fine Art in Beijing, where she led an “International Anatomy Intensive” for Professors from the eight, top art schools in China. She received her BFA from the Philadelphia College of Art and her MFA from the University of Pennsylvania.

Laura’s professional creative activity has included theater and film production and set design, most notably the independent feature film, Dogma, directed by Kevin Smith. Her sculptural works have been exhibited in New York, Shanghai and Beijing, as well as throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. She has twice been a Discipline Award winner for the PEW Fellowship in the Arts and the Robert Engman Award for sculpture from the University of Pennsylvania. Laura’s work has twice been featured in Sculpture Review Magazine and most recently has been included in the book, Women in Art, Volume 1, Author: Reinhard Fuchs, 520 Masterpieces of Visual Art, The Great Female Artists: From The Middle Ages to The Modern Era.

The first exhibition that the Matney Gallery held back in 2010 was called “Installation/Works on Paper.” Our current exhibition is also titled “Installation/Works on Paper” to pay homage to our roots. The 2023 show highlights the progress the gallery has made not only in continuing to support the artists that have built us up but also to represent the new artists that have created our artistic forward movement. We are celebrating the authenticity of the artist community that we support, which, in turn, supports us and our contemporary art vision.
The exhibition delves into how artists transform the blank white page into an innovative piece of art. Beyond the visual appeal of the pieces, the exhibition invites contemplation on the psychological and imaginative meanings that emerge from the interplay between the artworks and the space they occupy. These collections of works from many different artists within our community move and interact with each other as well as the space creating conversations and new interpretations. Paper is a medium readily available to the public, yet our artists have created pieces that appeal to the sophisticated eye of the art lover and collector. They have completely transformed a material to fit their artistic vision, whether it is paint on canvas, photography, drawings, printmaking, and even mixed media.

A Glimpse into the Future of the Matney Gallery

A Glimpse Into the Future, curated by john lee Matney, emphasizes forward movement. As seen in this preview, movement takes many forms. With the passage of time, art evolves, but evolution is also possible through past reflection. This show brings new and old pieces of art into dialogue with one another in order to highlight the gallery’s growth, as well as its newest phase. BRIAN FREER’S NATURAL CAUSES

Natural Causes is a collection of images taken over the past 2 years. Shot mostly during the pandemic, the collection consists of swampy landscapes, mountain vistas and the small details within them, captured to evoke our primal psyche. It was the late spring of 2001 when I met Angelina Jolie’s famous make up artist, Paul Starr, on a shoot for Interview magazine in New York. He asked me if I had ever worked with Iman, another client of his, and suggested that he would take my portfolio over to her house, just a few blocks down the street from my studio. The session was very successful. She wore fabulous dresses sent over by Alexander McQueen. Iman took on the role of a fierce warrior Goddess and embodied it completely.

A couple days later, Iman returned to the studio to take a look over the edits with me, and to my great surprise, David Bowie came along to help choose the cover. He was every bit as charismatic and extraordinary as one can imagine, but really kind and lovely to talk to. David was very involved in the selection process and had a great eye for imagery. Both of them loved the photos During the editing session, David casually mentioned that he might be working on a new album and that perhaps he would call me to talk about shooting the cover for it. .

Meanwhile, the terrible events of 9/11 took place less than a mile from my studio, and for a little while I even forgot about the prospects of shooting my first David Bowie album cover. Yet, a few weeks after the tragedy, true to his word, Bowie called me. He is one of the very few celebrities that I have worked with who personally got involved, and was extremely communicative and very hands-on in the process David was very eager to get it all set up as quickly as possible and to shoot within a couple days.

He returned to my studio the next day, and brought a series of early Man Ray images that he was very interested in referencing in some way or another. He wanted to be styled in Forties’s suits and wanted to get into the character of a blind man. At that time, most of my work was very colorful, but David was profoundly visionary and believed that it would be interesting for me to produce a series of mainly black and white album images, as well as some color images for press.

Heathen was released in 2002, and Bowie went on tour to promote the album. Around that time, I got a call from GQ in London, asking me to shoot David for their prestigious “Men of the Year” cover. Since Bowie was busy with the tour and was not available for a shoot within the deadline for the magazine, a creative solution had to be found. READ MORE

Artist Interview with Ivan Plusch: The Existential Threshold within Paint

Ivan Plusch, is an artist that has developed a style of painting that evokes questions about time itself. His paintings ooze and flow in different directions allowing time and gravity to accompany him as the artist in a collaborative dance. Plusch, born in 1981, graduated from the St. Petersburg Academy of Art and Design in St. Petersburg, Russia. He later attended Cite Internationale des Artes in Paris, France. Ivan currently resides in Hungary and has been living there since 2016. Given his unique painting technique, the Matney Gallery conducted the following interview to better understand his painting process and his artist’s purpose.

Michael K. Paxton: NEWS

Michael received an Individual Artist Program grant from the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events for both photography of new work and series of accordion folded cards for future exhibitions #DCASEgrants. 

Michael’s work will be featured in a forthcoming one-person exhibition of large-scale paintings and drawings that will be with the University Art Gallery of Western Illinois University. Opening September 12th and running through October 19th, 2023, the core of the exhibition will draw from my Interpolations series. A short Artist Talk will be at the opening, A big thank you to Tyler Hennings, Director.

ARTIST STATEMENT In the beginning I became intrigued by the multitude and varying types of sonograms that are produced by ultrasounds. I pursued these mysterious images as they pointed to an opportunity to investigate both observed reality and abstraction at the same time. Having no interest in illustrating these sources my goal was to use the sketches I made of these found images as a route towards creating a new series of drawings and paintings. Early in their development the concept of interpolation also started to percolate as I started working. With all that said I am sure that making this work during the current pandemic with the silent nature of the virus led me directly towards a medical source where internal possible problems are made visible through sound. Coupled with that is this constant and unrelenting isolation’s strange effect on my focus and thinking in the way I approached the work as days, turned into months, turned into a new year.
