INTERVIEW WITH SIDNEY ROUSEI was born to a Mormon family of six about an hour outside of Atlanta. I am the youngest. For most of my childhood, things were really just simple and happy. I earned my Eagle Scout, spent time with friends, and overall felt at peace with my beliefs and situation. About the age of 13, however, I experienced a sudden mental shift while washing my hands that caused all sensory input to become incredibly shrill and overwhelming. Sounds, light, and repetitive thoughts became unbearable and this lasted for many years. READ MORE Sidney Rouse is an American artist known for his evocative works examining entropy, illusion, and personal acceptance. A self-taught photographer, painter, sculptor, and filmmaker, his creative practice began as a form of comfort during his departure from the Mormon sect and grew in reaction to his secular transition. Utilizing mirrors, water, and illusory compositions, Rouse achieves surreal imagery entirely through analog techniques— a practice he describes as "outsourcing to nature." For this reason, he is as much a technical innovator pushing the boundaries of ordinary material as he is an artist in pursuit of sincere creative expression. Kent Knowles lives and works in Atlanta. While focused on the traditional technical aspects of painting, his work also examines the expressive qualities of figure, pattern, and design in contemporary art. INTRODUCING RICHARD DOWNSI grew up in Southern California during the hotrod and mini truck craze of the ’70s. I was still in high school and a friend had introduced me to the airbrush and its abilities to create smooth renderings and I was blown away. I got an airbrush for my high school graduation and now I was all set to start my career in art. I quickly started painting murals on hotrods and mini trucks. I soon met “The Wizard”—a mysterious character who wore long flowing wizard’s robes, and whose actual name no one really knew. The man owned a tiny T-shirt shop on Sunset Boulevard, and he paid me to airbrush clothing. I could paint whatever I felt like painting, and the artistic freedom was fun. This connection led to a significant early commission. Less than one year after high school, I landed a job to paint the tour bus of a band that I had never heard of. The band’s singer was Lionel Richie, and his band was called the Commodores. He has worked for most United States periodicals and newspapers ranging from Smithsonian Magazine to the New York Times and international organizations such as the International Monetary Fund and the United Nations publication divisions. Hi, I'm Leslie Bodzy and I'm an artist. I work in both New York City and in Houston, Texas, and I'm really happy to be showing my show Absence and Presence at the Linda Matney Gallery in Williamsburg, Virginia. I'm currently completing my MFA in studio art at the Art Institute of Chicago, where I'll graduate this summer and I'm actually coming to art as a second career. I was previously a business gal, but I'd always loved art and I'd always made things since I was a child. I was influenced by my mother to appreciate art color and design. JOHN RUDELJohn Rudel has exhibited his work across the country in venues including the Georgia Museum of Art (Athens, GA), the University of Miami Art Museum (Oxford, OH), the Lauren Rodgers Museum (Laurel, MS), the Williamsburg Art and Historical Center (Brooklyn, NY), and the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art (Virginia Beach, VA). Rudel’s drawings were given the “Award of Distinction in Drawing” at the 2007 Virginia Artists Juried Exhibition at the Charles Taylor Arts Center in Hampton VA, and his Paintings were selected by Lisa Dennison, Director of the Guggenheim NY as 1 of 20 winners of the 2002 MFA National Competition in New American Paintings Magazine. In 2004 Rudel was awarded a Mississippi Arts Commission Fellowship. In addition to 8 solo exhibitions in the last ten years, Rudel has been commissioned three times by the Norfolk Public Art Commission and also has a large mural featured in the NEON Arts District in Norfolk. He is Professor of Art at Virginia Wesleyan University where he also serves as Curator of Exhibitions for the Neil Britton Art Gallery. Rudel was awarded a Batten Professorship in 2014 in recognition of excellence in teaching, scholarship, community contributions, and passion for inspiring excellence in others. ALISON STINELY“Conglomerate V” and “Conglomerate VI” are extensions of a series of smaller works. The six Conglomerate works combine both old and new techniques and materials including oil painting, gilding, hydrodipping, and 3D printing. Prior to the beginning of this body of work, I was creating pieces using oil painting and good, old-fashioned manual sculptural processes. I decided to increase the fluidity of my sculptural work by exploring 3D modeling and printing methods which eventually led to my current studio practice. Additionally, the incorporation of gold leaf in the Conglomerate series reinforces the religious and artistic history that my work speaks to, while hydrodipping allows me to replicate the painted image found within the central square onto the sculptural elements framing the painting. ZUZKA VACLAVIKLAST CALL ON HER PRE-PANDEMIC INVENTORYAn artist molded by her international experiences, Zuzka is a citizen of the United States and Slovakia as her parents escaped from Communist Czechoslovakia. Vaclavik grew up in Germany where she took art lessons from a Czech painter. Her passion and curiosity for new experiences led her to pursue her development as an artist in the Far East. She lived in Phnom Pehn, Cambodia for two years before beginning her graduate school studies. Vaclavik has exhibited her work in New York, California, Cambodia, Germany, Austria, and across the United States. Critical reviews/publications of her work can be found in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, New American Paintings, and in Germany through Sudwest Presse. BRIAN FREERPhotography is a meditative art allowing me to subtract everything that doesn’t matter at that moment. I shoot details to reflect on the shape and form and texture while my objective is to empty my mind of everything except for what’s right in front of me. I'd like the viewer to be able to see it as close to how I saw it and that means it should fill their field of view. TEDDY JOHNSONTeddy Johnson's paintings explore storytelling, history, color, culture, and form. Solo exhibits include: The American Poetry Museum (2020), The Linda Matney Gallery (2019), The Bromo Seltzer Arts Tower (2016), MK Gallery (2016), and the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley (2013/2014). His paintings have been featured in Fox 45's Hometown Hotspot and Baltimore Style Magazine. As a curator, Teddy has collaborated on shows in Clarke County, VA, Baltimore, MD, Arnold, MD, and Brooklyn, NY. Teddy's education includes a BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art, an MFA from The Lamar Dodd School of Art at the University of Georgia, and two semesters of study in Cortona, Italy. PRINTED AND PDF CATALOGS ARE AVAILABLE The recent paintings of Miles Cleveland Goodwin (b. 1980) are full of contrasts and transformations that capture a sense of place and the emotions it conjures. Born in Mississippi and currently based in Georgia, Goodwin is deeply rooted in the South and inspired by its contradictions and mysteries. His color palette also recalls the overcast gloom of the Pacific Northwest, where he earned a BFA from the Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland. While some earlier works are like twisted fables, these new paintings urge viewers to look beneath the veil of appearance. Like a Flannery O’Conner story, they convey dark forces lurking below the surface of the ordinary. . SHEILA GIOLITTIPhysics proves the fundamental unity of all material existence. Quantum physics suggest that human consciousness may affect the outcome of physical experiments, suggesting the essential unity of everything extends beyond the physical universe of matter and energy, and that the deepest reality is not some miniscule particle of matter, but a universal consciousness that pervades everything. LAST CALL Yang, Chunsheng (b. 1960, Yunnan), also finds the question of who he is to be fundamental, and his work reveals both Chinese and foreign influences. Unlike the other artists above, however, Yang abandoned the “fashionable” methods of abstract painting for a more realistic approach. While his work displays a slick realism with naturalistic details and modeling, the mood and effects of his works are surreal and disquieting which may allude to the current socio-political situation in China.
'Interesting paintings can only hint at exploring our own reality,' says Yang, and the scenes of his Beijing Travel Notes series call what we think we know about reality into question. The juxtaposition of detailed figures with flat swathes of minimal grounds, the unexpected contrasts of scale and color, and the skewed placements of figures are unsettling. Set in Tiananmen Square, as indicated by the familiar portrait of Mao Zedong above the archway, Beijing: 3 Uniforms depicts the famous location as a frozen space in mostly icy blue and gray tones. Large, looming figures in dark heavy coats, gloves, and hoods with backs turned guard the scene, their cropped forms providing sharp contrast to the small figure they frame in the middle ground. Striking in his color and detail, this uniformed man walks hurriedly across the smooth ground, his entire form a bright red. Linda Matney Gallery is dedicated to hosting exhibitions of innovative emerging artists, as well as displaying the work of more established national and international artists, including works of painting, installation, video, photography, sculpture and performance. Named after Linda Matney, who lost her battle with cancer in 2001, John Lee Matney and the Matney family have established a research-based contemporary gallery that develops thematic group shows and collaborative art projects with international and American artists in Virginia and elsewhere. In its ten years in the community - Linda Matney Gallery has focused on the work and ideas of some of the most significant and provocative artists of our time including Alison Stinely's Gilded Splinters in 2018 that faced censorship before finding a home at the Matney Gallery in the #metoo movement as well as A Celebration of Female Artists in 2017 that showcased local female artists and the motivations and challenges they faced in their work.
